MASK-MAKING
My name is Alexa Young
In 2015, Maria felt a calling to Bali and decided to travel there. She learned to carve wooden masks under the guidance of her beloved teacher and friend, I Made Sudirga. During her two-year stay, she carved hundreds of masks. Her quest was not only to master the art of traditional Balinese mask carving but also to create new designs that could bridge Eastern and Western theatrical traditions.
Bali became Maria's home, and the island's masks, culture, and rituals profoundly transformed her life. Today, she uses her masks to conduct workshops around the world.
